Schedule for Week Six

Reading for Monday: Chapter 18: The Trojan Saga/Odyssey

Additional sections from the Odyssey to be handed out in class

Monday, August 19th

Discussion: The modern representations of Penelope and Circe - what do these say about our culture? The Penelope of Oh Brother Where Art Thou. Where is Circe? Are elements of the Sirens and Circe combined into one scene?

The Penelope of the modern movie The Odyssey with Armand Asante.

The Circe of the modern movie - why? Is it that modern audiences would not understand the complexity of Homer's Circe?

Reading for Tuesday: Chapter 19 (Legends of Argos) and Chapter 21 (Legends of Attica)

Tuesday, August 20th

Comparison of Perseus and Theseus: Do the motifemes parallel each other?

Discussion: Do modern representations of Heroes pander to the lowest common denominator? Have binary oppositions become so firm in our culture that Circe can't be good and bad, Penelope can't be strong and a woman, that Theseus can't be a hero and a rapist, that Heracles (or Moses or David) can't be a murderer and a hero?

Is the lowest common denominator of the modern audience less intellectually mature than the lowest common denominator of the ancient audience?
